People First Bridgend is the leading specialist, value-based, user-led organisation, committed to upholding the rights of people with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorder in the county of Bridgend, to enable them to obtain their full rights and privileges as citizens.
For over 20 years (previously as Bridgend People First,) we have been supporting this community. Over this time, we have evolved into a locally focussed organisation with the expertise to meet local needs.
We champion the rights of people with learning disabilities and/or autism and enable them to have a voice and make choices about the things that matter to them.
We facilitate a group called the Advisory Team which is made up of members from the learning disability and autistic community, nominated the day services; training projects; supported housing; community groups and also people who work. This group discuss issues that affect them and take back to their peers information; they participate in consultations and inform the work of People First Bridgend.
We provide an advocacy service to help people who have difficulty representing their own views, either by advocating on their behalf or by supporting them to speak about the things that matter to them.
We use training to change the perception about people with learning disabilities and/or autism
We support our beneficiaries to go into schools and deliver learning disability awareness training and autism awareness training to pupils
We support our beneficiaries to work with professionals such as South Wales Police, HMP Parc and Medical Students and the public, such as the WI to provide awareness training about the needs of our client group.
We enable people with learning disabilities and/or ASD to develop their potential
Through supporting them through learning and enabling them to volunteer and undertake employment with us and others.
We also work with them to develop easy read accessible versions of policies, consultations and other documents so that they can understand things that matter to them and voice their opinion.
We need to fund raise to continue to deliver the work we do. You could help support us by funding us to continue to provide these projects that make such a difference.
